Coal-fired electric power generation has increased worldwide. Numerous investigations performed in the USA, England and the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) unanimously assess highly favourable prospects for unfired combined-cycle power plants with integrated coal gasification for economic power generation. GUD is the KWU acronym for its package-engineered unfired combined-cycle stations. The paper reports the status of coal-gasifier development in the FRG. The results of studies for national and international projects involving integrated coal-gasification combined-cycles (ICG-GUD) show that many process parameters affect the net efficiency level. A decisively important factor governing the economy of all combined-cycle power plants is, of course, the inlet temperature of the gas turbines. The economic advantages of combined-cycle over conventional steam power plants have been evaluated in many international studies [1]. The levelized relative cost of electricity from both types of plant in the FRG are presented as supplementary information. The nitrogen-dioxide and sulphur-dioxide emissions of ICG-GUD stations are compared with those of conventional pulverized-coal-fired steam power plants with flue-gas desulphurization in the FRG. The ability of KWU high-temperature gas turbines with associated pairs of silo-type multi-burner combustion chambers to operate successfully with low-calorific fuel gases is discussed. This compatability has been demonstrated in the world's first integrated coal-gasification combined-cycle power plant in Lunen (FRG) and by lengthy operating experience with firing blast-furnace gas. No difficulties are foreseen in modifying the design of the well-proven large silo-type combustion chambers and burners to obtain a high-temperature gas turbine that is optimally matched to the various coal-gasification systems under development both in respect of highly reliable base-load duty and low NO_x emissions.
