To evaluate the electro-slag remelted (ESR) superalloys for high quality forgings used in gas turbines, the comparison between ESR and vacuum arc remelted (VAR) alloys of A286 and Inconel 718 is discussed on uniformity of chemical compositions, size distribution of Titanium carbonitride, hot workability and various mechanical properties. From the results of these tests, the ESR superalloys is found to have superior hot workability and comparable tensile, Charpy impact, creep rupture and low cycle fatigue properties to VAR alloys.
