The gas turbine has a long, complex history enroute to becoming a viable automotive engine. U. S. manufacturers conducted lengthy R&D, the most noteworthy being the Chrysler program. The smooth ride in their cars belied the fact that fuel economy was poor when compared to capabilities in contemporary automobiles. Present DOE contractual endeavors include the specific introduction of ceramics into the hot section of the engine in order to operate at higher temperatures and so greatly increase the overall efficiency of the gas turbine engine.
