Small engines require small turbochargers. This paper describes the design and performance objectives of the T2 turbocharger and how they were met in an envelope significantly smaller than that of the earlier T3. The original design objective of the T2 was to extend Garrett's turbocharging capabilities downward to engines as small as 1.2 liters. A so-called high-flow T2, currently in a pre-production mode, extends the engine displacement range of the T2 frame upward to about 3.0 liters. The level of technology in the T2 is considered representative of that in current production passenger car turbochargers.
