The formation of NO_2 in the mixing zone of hot burned gases with the diluent air or unburned gases in combustors is studied theoretically. The spatial distributions of temperature and seventeen species concentrations in the gas mixture were predicted in laminar and turbulent flow fields at atmospheric pressure. NO_2 is found to be produced in the mixing region of the hot burned gas with the cool surrounding gas, having a peak located at the gas temperature of about 1000K in which NO converts almost completely to NO_2. The NO_2/NO_x ratio increases with increase in turbulent diffusion and with decrease in the ratio of the burned gas to the surrounding gas velocity at the inlet of the mixing zone, especially for turbulent flows.
