Since around 1978 a vigorous effort has been under way at Nissan Motor Co. 's Central Engineering Laboratories to improve the fuel economy of the gas turbine engine. One of the most effective ways to upgrade the fuel economy is to raise the cycle maximum temperature and in this research effort a target level of 1350℃ was selected. Ceramics including silicon nitride and silicon carbide are regarded as promising materials that could withstand the rigors of actual use at such a high temperature. Various tests have been conducted on defferent test pieces and some engine component parts made of these ceramic materials. This paper describes the research and development work that has been done on a ceramic combustor made of silicon carbide. The examined combustor was of the can-type, 2mm thick and 85mm in diameter. Thermal resistance tests and cyclic tests were conducted under an inlet air temperature of 900℃ and an outlet gas temperature of 1350℃. The test results have confirmed that this ceramic combustor has a high potential for practical application to the gas turbine engine.
