The purpose of this study was to clarify the quantitative tendency of nursing documents in Japan by means of the database of Igaku Chuo Zasshi. The study counted the number of nursing literature published between 2003 and 2005, and then classified it according to the type of articles and the organizations to which their authors belonged. The research made it clear that the number of documents in the field of nursing has been flat for three years since 2003. As to research papers, hospitals exceeded educational institutions in number. It indicated that not only members on the faculty of nursing but also clinical nurses wrote articles on nursing. According to the analysis by category, the academic activity of the nurses working for public university hospitals was more slackened than that of the nurses working for national and private university hospitals. And the rate of production of research papers was higher in national universities than in public and private universities.
