This paper describes the following three points regarding Performance Based Design of road embankments. Firstly, it describes the current practice of the design of road embankments in Japan that is based on empirical technologies. Secondly, it describes the outline on.how the performance based design methodology should be introduced into the practical engineering manual. Finally, it states that there exist many aspects of engineering issues to fully implement the performance based design methodologies, and that the empirical design methodologies still have to be in effect.
