"The moral teaching of Democritus is not based on any metaphysical basis, nor is it, as far as we can judge from detached fragments, in any sense a complete system......There is no effort to link it up any way with the physical system." Indeed, Prof. C. Bailey's statement quoted above can hardly be ignored, but it is also the well-known fact that the psychology (of sense) is completely explained by the atomic theory. Therefore, I think, it may be said that the moral theory also may be brought out in some connexion with the physical theory. Then, what sort of connexion is to be pointed out? In this paper, giving the details of Democritus' teaching as a whole, I intend to find it in each point of view. And, in short, the conclusion is as follows. Happiness is a property of the Soul, and it means imperturbability of the Soul. Both excess and defect are to be rejected, because they are apt to change and to produce great movement in the Soul.
