Due to progressing low birthrate and spreading lifelong learning, school architectures is now required to be available for 24 hours a day, and provide different spaces to allow various usage, in addition to classrooms and hallways. Along with this trend, lighting environment also must have qualities suited for such spaces. Requirements have been shifting from the quantitative fulfillments by homogeneous lighting with florescent lamps, toward comfortable and attractive space adopting indirect lighting or natural daylight. By shifting the focus of lighting design from pursue of simple, uniform lighting toward integration of various devices for natural daylight, such as skylight or light shelf, into the architecture planning, well-lighted environment can be achieved, as while contributing to energy saving as well.
