The status and outlook of composites and other advanced materials applied to aero-engines for the subsonic, super sonic and hyper sonic transportations and space planes are discussed from an application technology point of view. The material systems presented are mostly of a composite type. These include polymer matrix composites (PMC), metal matrix composites (MMC), ceramic matrix composites (CMC), advanced carbon carbon (ACC) and functionally gradient materials (FGM). Also included are some super alloys, inter-metallic compounds (IMC) and monolithic advanced ceramics.
