This is but a brief overview of the technologies being studied for the turbochargers of today, devices which promise reduced emission and better engine performance. One cannot help but feel that more improvements and developments are sure to come. When turbochargers were introduced into mass-produced vehicles in 1979, a great many technologies developed for them entered the market. With the demands of today, however, such as fuel economy, reduced emissions and so forth, more improvements will be needed. Not just improvements in turbocharger units, but improvements in the combination of the engine and all vehicle systems as well. And this will mean that automakers, turbogenerator manufacturers, and research institutes will need to cooperate with each other on R&D even more than they have in the past.
