• The evaluation of R & D has been based on the direct output such as scientific papers and patents. However, it has become more important to evaluate the R & D from the point of outcomes, which are directly correlated with the benefit to the users, consumers and tax-payers, as the effectiveness of R & D has been more questioned. Here, we discuss the outcomes of robotics and robot industry by examining the teil lectual properties with a patent map because we have a very unique history of R & D for robot technology in Japan. Furthermore, we also discuss how we can establish the model of outcome-based evaluation of R & D in the engineering education by taking an example of the education in Waseda University.
