The life of automotive transmission gears today is often governed by tooth surface strength, and especially by pitting fatigue life. Being able to predict pitting life with good accuracy is a crucial issue in gear development. An investigation of gears that suffered pitting in evaluations of automotive transmissions revealed the following points. It is that the shape of the tooth surface changes due to wear. The first investigated the effects of the wear on the pitting life, and we made that the wear has had an influence on the pitting clear. In this study, a new method of predicting gear pitting life was developed that takes into account the influence of changes in the wear. This method makes it possible to predict the pitting life of automotive transmission gears under various evaluation conditions with markedly higher accuracy than that of conventional methods.
