This paper presents a new and more appropriate method for preprocessing of Electrocardiogram signal using mediated morphological filters. Mediated morphological filters (MMFs) are based on a particular combination of median operator and classical morphological operators. The method deploys MMFs for removing impulsive noise and power line 50/60 Hz noise in the first step of preprocessing. In the second step, an efficient morphological background normalization is employed to conclude the preprocessing result. The proposed method has been applied to adult and fetal ECG signals. Accurate numerical descriptions demonstrate better performance of the new algorithm compared with that of the classical morphological one.
