The abundance of coal boron and its mode of occurrence have been investigated by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and solid-state ^<11>B magic angle spinning-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MAS NMR), respectively. The concentration of boron is independent on coal rank or its ash content. The chemical shift at -5.88〜-7.53ppm, as determined by NMR analysis, corresponds to trigonally coordinated organoboron. The lower chemical shins, denoting tetrahedrally coordinated borates, were also found, which are mainly associated with basic elements. During the thermal extraction of coal by organic solvents, organoboron was preferentially extracted. For a coal having more organoboron and a higher extraction yield, a larger fraction of boron could be extracted.
