The System of Case Assignment in English

In the previous subsections, I considered what consequences we have for the Case-assigning property when we introduce partitive Case into the class of Cases in English. In 3.1, we saw that we have no need to think that a transitive verb assigns partitive Case to its indefinite direct NP object. Rather, we can generalize the assignment of structural accusative Case, which is always assigned to the definite NP complement-by its head verb, to every NP complement, whose evidence comes from the ECM construction. In 3.2, my concern was with the passive construction in which an indefinite NP complement appears in the D-Structure object position. There we saw that partitive Case assignment should not take place, in light of the fact that the base-generated postverbal NP complement must move to the subject position, which would be unnecessary if partitive Case could be assigned to the NP at D-Structure. In 3.3, I took up there-construction and its raising counterpart sentence. There, adopting Chomsky's (1991) (and Belletti's (1988)) argument that no Case transmission through chain is allowed in this case, I concluded that unaccusative verbs in English (as well as in other languages) assign partitive Case to their direct NP Complement. But at the same time, I pointed out a theoretical problem of there arising a Case conflict in (especially) a raising sentence whose main verbal head is an unaccusative. I took the position which tolerates this conflict in favor of partitive Case assignment in there-construction. As a result of our discussion so far, we will have the following system of Case assignment in English : (16) The System of Case Assignment in English (Revised Version) Structural Case Assignment (i) Nominative Case is assigned by AGR (ii) Accusative Case is assigned by V (transitives) Inherent Case Assignment (iii) Inherent Case is assigned by N, A, P, and V (unaccusatives)
