In this paper, we will examine the negation prefixes/hu/and/mu/in Japanese from the viewpoint of morpho-phonology. The origin of these prefixes is Chinese, but in some words these are changed into/bu/with a voiced plosive consonant in the course of the prefixation. This process of voicing can be related to sequential voicing or rendaku.
