Nuclear power generation features a stable electricity supply and is a clean energy source that does not emit carbon dioxide in operation. Promotion of nuclear power generation and related nuclear fuel cycle premised on secured safety is a core measure of the Japanese energy policy to achieve both energy security and resolution of the global environmental problem. The technology strategy for the long period through 2030 which contributes to utilization of nuclear energy and secured safety as premises was covered by the New National Energy Strategy. Technologies that contribute to keeping the share of electricity generation, including such technologies as load leveling, for promoting nuclear power utilization and for securing safety were evaluated. Concerning light water reactor, technologies that enable advanced utilization and decommissioning of reactors, nextgeneration light water reactor and related fuel cycle technologies were selected to develop. Technologies of fast breeder reactor and related fuel cycle for the long term point of view and technologies to dispose radioactive wastes, being essential to use nuclear energy were important. Such technologies as energy management, transmission, system control or electric power storage were also necessary to assist growing nuclear power generation.
