It was reported by the author that the muscle contraction by knee jerk spreaded over other limbs reflexly in normal persons. In this study, knee extensor was stimulated mechanically by tap on the knee tendon or electrically with electrodes which were attached on the surface of the knee extensor of one side. Electromyogram was recorded from coaxial needle electrodes inserted in m. rectus femoris of each side, while movement of the leg was recorded with tambour. The subject, sitting on a chair, extended his legs at the knee joints slight voluntarily. Tap on the knee tendon or single induction shock on the knee extensor of one side evoked reflex extension of the leg of contralateral side as well as of ipsilateral side. Rhythmic spike discharge from m. rectus femoris of each side disappeared during the reflex extension of each leg. This electrical silence continued 100〜200 msec. Synchronous discharge preceded reflex movement of the leg. It was estimated that crossed reflex time was 40〜80 msec. The silent period, up to now, has been discussed mainly on ipsilateral side but not on contralateral side in man. It was confirmed from these results that crossed reflexes of legs were evoked by mechanical or electrical stimulation, and accompanied with electrical silence during the reflex contraction in normal persons.
