国立情報学研究所の「学術雑誌公開支援事業」により電子化されました。The Input Hypothesis is Krashen's attempt to explain how the learner acquires a second language. The hypothesis suggests that language learning is driven by the receptive skills rather than by the productive ones. Krashen cites children who typically go through a silent period during which they absorb the language and then later begin to produce it. This hypothesis therefore maintains, that increased input will result in more language acquisition and rejects the notion that increased output, written or oral, results in a better acquirement of the language. It is the aim of this paper to evaluate this controversial theory and its contributions to second language acquisition examining the modifications and extensions made to it and how it has been met by critics.
