• We have seen all the previous studies on NR are incomplete and many more factors than have been studied systematically so far seem to be involved in this phenomenon. The problem is how to explain these seemingly diverse factors systematically. We think some form of prototype theory is promising in this respect: Since the motivation for NR is originally functional, constructions typically used as a hedge are more likely to be conventionlaized than others. This line of argument will be developed in further studies.
