Henry Purcell is known to have written twenty-four ceremonial odes for the Royal families, St Cecilia's Day, and common people's ceremonial occasions. As the first part of the fifth of the analyses of his odes, this paper deals with the two works written in 1693 and 1694. The 1693 birthday ode for Queen Mary II exceeds the quality shown so far in the preceding four birthday odes for the queen, in the effective use of wind instruments such as the obbligato trumpet, two oboes, and two recorders. The content of the poem is made more impressive by the vocal music, especially by the two countertenor solo movements. The ceremonial ode for the second jubilee of the Trinity College, Dublin is small in scale, lacking in evident tone of wind instruments except recorders. However, its simple but artful writing is suitable for a scholastic ceremony of a university, with the ninth movement in its peak.
