We examined how participant's active control of the audio-visual stimulus by the use of computer mouse would affect the impression formation in observing the visual stimuli (a colored circle). We combined different colors with sound conditions that would give participants pleasant or unpleasant impression by themselves. The stimulus movement was accompanied with different sound stimuli (e.g., a transient tone when the visual stimuli reached the top and bottom ends of the movable range in the display, continuous and constant pitched tone, or continuous and different pitched tone). In each trial of those conditions, participants rated the impressions of the stimuli. The results of the experiments suggest that the transient sound which is synchronous with events in the display would enhance the pleasantness of the audio-visual stimulus for both active and passive observations.
