Chromosome numbers and karyotypes of Commelina diffusa were studied for plants from six populations: one locality (2n=30 and 60) of Thailand, one locality (2n=86) of Australia and four localities (2n=72) of Japan. The 2n=30 karyotype consists of two chromosomal groups, 10 median (m) and 20 submedian (sm) chromosomes. The 2n=60, 72 and 86 karyotypes consist, respectively, of three groups: median, submedian and subterminal chromosomes. The 2n=30 and 2n=60 karyotypes are characterized by chromosomal features that the m-chromosomes are shorter than the larger sm-chromosomes. On the other hand, in the 2n=72 and 86 karyotypes, the larger m-chromosomes are closely equal to the larger sm-chromo-somes in length. The 2n=72 karyotypes differ slightly among the four populations. The 2n=86 chromosome number of the plant from Australia and the 2n=30 and 60 karyotypes from Thailand are presented for the first time. The variation among 2n=72 karyotypes also is reported for the first time. The variable chromosome numbers and karyotypes suggest the existence of some chromosome races within the species.
