"Black" is very often used metaphorically, in Greek as in all languages. Just as 'white' is symbolical of all that is good and desirable, except insofar as courage is concerned......, so 'black' stands for all that is terrible and fearful, but also for bravery. The association of 'white' with cowardice probably arises from the fact that the face becomes pale from fear, and also that a white skin is effeminate. 'Blackness' of complexion, on the other hand, results from an out-door life, which brings out the masculine virtues of courage and strength, and also hairiness, which the Greeks, like most ancient peoples, associated with manliness."
