In this paper, I would like to focus on elderly paupers living in 19^<th> century England and Wales. I have been studying especially about workhouse treatment of elderly paupers. The reasons I chose this topic are, 1. The workhouse was a typical institution to incarcerate paupers. And for poor elderly, the workhouse was a place of terror, and it was said that they would rather die than go into the House (workhouse). 2. But, paupers who received out relief always far outnumbered those who were given indoor relief (workhouse treatment). Elderly paupers who were given out relief continued to live in their own communities. Other than Poor Law Out relief, was there any assistance, such as, particularly, aid from their relatives? Regarding the issue of additional assistance, there has not much research yet. And the researchers involved in its study have not reached a consensus. I would like to explore this topic, using Parliamentary Paper and poverty research done at the time.
