This article aims to advocate through statistical data that linguistic ability creates a competitive advantage on three dimensions of an individual, a company and a nation. On an individual dimension, the article asserts that the ability wanted varies according to the times, nations, attached units and company policies. The times can be said to have changed from "linguistic ability alone," to "linguistic ability plus," and further to "linguistic ability basic." On a company dimension, the necessity of linguistic ability is evidenced by Japanese and European data, and the article elaborates on a variance in linguistic ability required according to the degree of involvement in international business and on the importance of linguistic ability for international management. On a nation dimension, lastly, after pointing out through country-by-country data on foreign direct investment, subsidiaries, and M & A that linguistic ability can be an important infrastructure, the article advocates that a nation gains a great competitive advantage by its linguistic ability in the service industry, especially in the call center business where languages are goods of trade. This article concludes with some concrete propositions on investment in linguistic ability by a nation.
