The large-N Wilson lattice gauge theory and the Eguchi-Kawai model are studied by using the method of mean field with corrections. The large-N Wilson theory undergoes the first order phase transition in agreement with the Monte Carlo data. The equivalence between the Wilson theory and the EK model in the large-N limit breaks down at the one-loop level in the loop expansion in the weak-coupling region. The non-trivial role of lattice momenta in the Wilson theory in contrast with the EK model is emphasized.
