The purpose of this paper is to examine how the "comment clause" you know and you see are manipulated in present-day English and to characterize their textual function. The first section will review the treatments of "comment clause" by some representative linguists (Quirk et al., Holmes and Stenstron) and make a theoretical framework to analyze the data. Holmes' strength is to classify the function of you know and to relate its position to a particular function. I shall adopt and apply her theory on you know to my research. Assuming that you see also has a similar functions as you know, which is supported by Quirk et al., I shall do research about the usage of you know and you see in the spoken corpus of English (LLC). Here I shall take into consideration the styles of conversation, private or public, and the relationship among the participants. In this research, however, I shall leave the sexual distinction out of account. The findings acquired in this study are summarized as follows: (1) You know and you see are used in private conversation more than in public one. (2) In public conversation, you know and you see tend to be used by superiors toward inferiors. (3) In both private and public conversations, you know occurs more frequently than you see. (4) You know is used in public conversation in order to signal that the subsequent statement is presented as 'linguistic imprecision' or as 'given/shared knowledge.' This use is motivated by the speaker's wish to enable an addressee to understand with precision what s/he wants to convey. (5) You see is used less frequently than you know. This restricted use may be due to the nature of 'commitment' that you see entails intrinsically.
