To overcome a negative attitude toward and heighten interest in drawing and painting, and allow students to experience the pleasure of engaging in artistic expression, in "art and handicraft" lessons taught by the author a method was devised that involved having students use brush and ink to paint pictures. This paper makes methodological observations on the validity, and tests the effectiveness of the method in a practical manner. The method is distinguished by the way it has students try their hand at painting expression taking hints from the techniques employed to add illustrations to ceramics, such as "simplification" and "living lines", rather than confining them to the techniques of ink painting. This addressed the desire of students to "draw the way I want" and "express myself freely", and also allowed each to find his or her own sensibility.
