Marx's view on labour is many-sided. I will argue the multiple character of labour in five aspects, based on his 1857-58 note. We can grasp his view in following five phases. Namely, (1) material metabolism between man and Nature, (2) abstract human labour, (3) labour and free time, (4) active and creative labour, and (5) painful labour. In general, Marx's statements on (3), (4) and (5) phases of labour are less in his "Capital" than in his 1857-58 note. This is the reason why we often deal with his 1857-58 draft, in order to make the various phases of concrete labour clear. Marx suggests that overcoming of the pain and trouble, which labour entails inevitably, intensifies the implications of active and independent labour. The painful labour is not a mere negative or passive labour. These expressions are, however, far more prominent in his 1857-58 note than in "Capital." It is the purpose of this paper to show Marx's manifold view on labour from such a perspective. Without relating to the various phases of concrete labour, it is difficult to bring his many-sided view to light.
