The present study investigated the effects of practice of Body-Talk on heart rate, heart rate variability and anxiety. In this investigation, heart rate was monitored by electrocardiography in order to detect physiological changes resulting from Body-Talk, and to determine whether or not the effects were caused by vocalization. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was used to measure each subject's tendency toward anxiety. The subjects were 11 healthy university students (6 males, 5 females ; mean age, 21.0±1.8 years). After 30 minutes' rest in a supine position, the subjects remained in a supine position and received a 30-minutes' Body-Talk session from a Body-Talk instructor. Following the session, the subjects rested again for 30 minutes in a supine position. Two experiments were conducted in a one week period. In the first experiment, subjects received Body-Talk with remained silent, while in the second experiment they received it with vocalization. In each experiment, subjects' heart rate and heart rate variability were measured in the supine position for the last four minutes of the first rest session and for the last four minutes of the rest session after the Body-Talk. At the beginning and end of the experiments, each subject completed the STAI. The following results were found: 1) Heart rate decreased during Body-Talk, regardless of whether the subjects vocalized or remained silent. However, heart rate variability, as analyzed by the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), and the ratio of high frequency to low frequency power (LF/HF) demonstrated an increase during vocalization. This indicates that sympathetic nerves are stimulated by vocalization. 2) The tendency toward anxiety decreased regardless of silence or vocalization. The results of the present study are summarized as follows: 1. Body-Talk is an effective promoter of relaxation. 2. Sympathetic nerves can respond to vocalization even while the body and mind are in a state of relaxation.
