D. H. LAWRENCE's second novel The Trespasser is the description of not only erotic love experience but also his unique idea of love which is in germ form and not wholly developed in this novel. But it is important to examine his early idea of love to understand his later novels. At the day when he was writing The Trespasser, he had so many doubts about his own world, religion, love and death that he tried to discover love which would make life rich, right, and beautiful. D. H. LAWRENCE made the protagonists in The Trespasser experience his ideal state of love, two-in-one, the only Hermaphrodite. But they felt frustration with each other because the love which Siegmund, the hero, asked for is different from the love which Helena, the heroine, asked him for. Siegmund is a man who understands love in his blood consciousness, and Helena is a woman who understands love in her mental consciousness. So Helena loved Siegmund in her vision and she rejected him as a man. They felt frustration in their love at the last minute, because of the difference in quality of their love. Then LAWRENCE made Siegmund dissolve his frustration by experiencing nature's tenderness, warmth, and generosity that was greater than Helena's love for him. Siegmund alone could feel the tenderness, warmth, and generousity of nature, whis essay tries to explainby his 'pseudo-philosophy', Fantasia of the unconscious, "Sleep and dreams, ". LAWRENCE, though he failed to let Siegmund have the will to live, seemed to believe that through love experience with women we can find the door that leads to greater life including death, and to realize this greater life makes us have the will to live.
