If we imagine the picture of information economy or digital economy, there would be plural viewpoints on the resources that are used for economic activities. This paper analyses socioeconomic drivers of IT investment in the so-called "The Digital Economy" which are categorized originally by three dimensions : self-organizing factor, the intrinsic characteristics of information technology, and accelerating effects. Major findings are as follows ; The self-organizing factor includes the increasing returns and the decreasing transaction costs which are often found in using the services of information technology and information capital. In addition, information capital is accumulated in the process of transformation of production technologies, enhancement of consumption patterns and flexible production processes. I analyze the nature of rivalry between the types of information capital, that is, computer and network. The manufacturing industry demands for both types of information technology in Korea while the service industry shows a tendency to be biased toward one of the two kinds of information capital embodied by mainly information technology. The nature of rivalry with respect to the impact of technology fusion on the formation of network capital is also analyzed. Finally, there occurs an accelerating effect in the formation of information capital due to enhancement of consumption patterns (new consumerism) and synchronization of information-oriented policies worldwide.
