Magnetotelluric soundings have been made on two traverse lines to the north and west of the Century Zinc mine in NW Queensland in order to image the intermediate to deep structure in the region. The purpose of the MT surveys lies in delineating the extension of the Termite Range Fault (TRF), a major structure on the Lawn Hill Platform running through the Century Zinc mine with north-west strike direction. High quality MT signals (electrical and magnetic fields) have been obtained using remote reference techniques. During the survey, we operated the remote reference (RR) site in Gregory Downs, which is roughly 80 km apart from the field site. Besides the RR site in Australia, a permanent monitoring site in Esashi, Japan had been operating during the whole period of the surveys, simultaneously. The surveys have great meaning that 1) the first remote reference survey conducted in Australia, and that 2) the first trial that measures the MT signals in both the northern and the southern hemisphere, simultaneously. The MT data indicate a major deep seated contrast across the interpreted surface position of the Termite Range Fault. It suggests the fault extends from surface to perhaps 20 km depth, dips steeply NE and contains more resistive material in the hanging wall.
