Application of electromagnetic (EM), methods for geophysical investigations depends, in large part, on our understanding of the response of earth materials to EM fields. Useful frequency of EM fields ranges from nine to ten orders of magnitudes, with the scale of target varying from hundreds of kilometers down to a few millimeters. This presentation will be limited to data acquisition and analysis of EM fields for environmental investigations, and intermediate scale reservoir characterizations with some highlights on the role of fluids. The first subject deals with the apparent relationship between geo-hydrological and geophysical properties. It has been well known that fluids in pore space play major roles in controlling the bulk electrical properties of earth materials. Next, a high-frequency (<100 MHz) impedance EM system will be discussed. The system is designed to detect and characterize near-surface resistivity and dielectric properties simultaneously for environmental applications. Finally, a novel next-generation active EM system for detecting and characterizing unexploded ordnance (UXO) will be introduced. All three topics have been part of the research at Berkeley funded by various U.S. government agencies.
