The Kurushima Kaikyo (strait) has two narrow passes named Naka Suido and Nishi Suido which large vessels should pass along. According to the rules for this strait, vessels navigating with the tidal current should pass along Naka Suido and those against the tidal current should pass along Nishi Suido. Though the direction of the tidal current is shown by the signals, owing to a little difference between the times of change of tide shown by the signals and in the tide tables, vessels entering this strait a little before the time of change of tide are liable to be obliged to alter their courses near the entrance of the pass, which they were to pass along according to the tide tadles, and to enter the other pass. For this, navigators must always pay attention to the signals and be ready for taking a measure to meet the change. This is not only a matter troublesome for navigators but one of the principal causes of disasters at sea. Moreover, the signal station being at such a position difficult to be seen, vessels can not make sure the signals before they steer a course along the recommended route leading to an alternative pass. But as these difficulties can be eliminated by the way to show the signals according to culculated values in the tide tables, we examined if the way has any difficulties or dangers in manoeuvering vessels, and found that the idea mentioned above can be adopted practically.
