After students took part in a vocabulary learning activity, the author gave them a motivational beliefs questionnaire to find out why they had participated in the activity. The participants were Japanese college students learning conversational English in Japan with a U.S. American teacher. Primary motivating factors included desires to learn English, beliefs that the English learned was important or useful, a desire to completely finish the activity, and to a lesser degree, a desire for accuracy. These motivations were further supported by the students' beliefs that they could learn English through this particular activity. While the students perceived that others in the class wanted to participate, they seemed unconcerned regarding the opinions of other students or the teacher toward themselves, implying that social motivations for this activity were extremely low.
