This study examines under what conditions Japanese firms assign parent country nationals as a top management team at foreign affiliates. Using data collected from 103 Japanese affiliates located in Korea, hypotheses about determinants of an expatriate staffing policy are tested. Findings show that intrafirm transactions, centralization of decision-making, and transfer of a parent firm's management style affect an assignment of parent country nationals as executive managers at foreign affiliates. This study also reveals that the effects of centralization and local orientation on the expatriate staffing policy change as foreign affiliates accumulate local experiences.
