Japanese local communities located in the registered area of world heritage are mostly medium or small in their size. These local communities do not only share the world heritage as their common regional brand, but also a range of effects to be brought by the world heritage registration. This paper examines how these local communities in the world heritage should design the regional development taking a close look at three regions registered as the world heritage, namely Shirakami Mountains, Gassho Farmhouses in Shirakawago and Gokayama, and Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range. The paper suggests that the primary aim in the strategies for the regional development centered on the world heritage is not to attract more tourists, but to cultivate the unique value of the world heritage. The regional development with this aim would result in establishing the high-quality of regional brand and lead to regional activation. A set of four strategies for such regional development is proposed.
