This study analyzed a CD-ROM version of bibliographies on Japanese family and population, which was created by the Eurasian Project on Population and Family History. Japanese scholars from many disciplines, such as folklore studies, family sociology, and historical demography, have researched various aspects of the family according to their original interests, many of them regarding it as a symbol of Japanese culture. In the period from 1960-99, many significant contributions were made, with summaries of many specialized articles having been written, leading to a systematical interpretation of the Japanese family so that it can be characterized as unique to Japanese culture. This study cleared that such studies have actually appeared in each decade, always in the quantitatively declining period for Journal articles. It may be supposed that after the appearance of such studies, another stage of historical research on the Japanese family was complete.
