A Koushibyou (a Confucian joss house 孔子廟)) is a kind of temple dedicated to Confucius. Such temples were built by Chinese and overseas Chinese throughout Eastern Asia. The Okinawa Koushibyou is manifestation of Chinese culture there. In the era of the Ming Dynasty many of the Chinese who migrated to Okinawa settled in Kume-mura (久米村) in the southern part of Okinawa Island, where they were called Kume mura jin. (久米村人). They adhered to Confucianisam and held an annual Confucian festival called Sekiten (釋奠). The Okinawan Koushibyou is still visible today, but it is a reconstruction undertaken by volunteer Kume mura jin in the post-war period following its destruction in air raids. Despite its long history since its original foundation, the appeal of the Okinawan Koushibyou, in an age when values are being transformed so rapidly, is not so great. How is the Koushibyou seen by Okinawan people nowadays? Could it take a prominent place among the rest of Okinawa's historical heritage? In seeking answers to such questions about this monument, I have consulted various individuals belonging to the Kume souseikai (community heritage group 久米崇聖会), staff members of local government, and members of the general public.
