Structure calculations of ground states and excited states of atomic nuclei usually involve very large configuration spaces, and it thus becomes important to determine the most relevant configurations. The density matrix renormalization group and the wave function factorization are two related approximation methods that significantly truncate the configuration space of the nuclear shell model while keeping a very small truncation error.
