Matrix models have attracted much attention recently as a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. In this approach the space-time is treated dynami- cally as the eigenvalue distribution of matrices, and it has been suggested that the dimensionality of our space-time might be understood as the dynamical consequence of string theory. In this series of lectures I will review these new developments and comment on various historical backgrounds and related topics.
