Listeria monocytogenes is a gram-positive and facultative anaerobe bacilliform bacterium that is classified in the Listeria family, and is an environmental contaminant that usually exists widely in the natural world. This bacterium has been thought to be the principal causative of listeriosis, and human and mammal septicemia and meningitis have been complicated by the infection. It has also been noted as the causative bacteria of food poisoning via contaminated foods. Thus, the contamination and the infec tion by L. monocytogenes have currently attracted worldwide importance in the areas of both zoonosis and foodborne diseases. In the present study, the author developed a complete picture of the situations regarding the contami nation and the infection based on the epidemiological analyses of previous reports, and then elucidated the situation of meat contamination in Japan and the characteristics of the genomic structures for the contaminated strains based on a molecular epidemiological analysis. The possible pathogenicity of the strain for contaminated meat was tried to discuss from the comparison of the cell invasion abilities between the isolates from meats and from listeriosis patients.
