Several researchers have investigated pupils' intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. They found that elementary school pupils decreased in intrinsic motivation with age, although with slight differences among them. In Japan, Sakurai and Takano (1985) examined developmental trend in intrinsic and extrinsic motivation among Japanese elementary school pupils. This paper investigated intrinsic and extrinsic motivation using a questionnaire developed by Sakurai and Takano and then compared the results of 20 years ago and now. Thus, this study revealed that the components of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in contemporary Japanese elementary school pupils are almost similar to those of 20 years, but that now there is more of a developmental decline in intrinsic motivation among elementary school pupils, compared to those 20 years ago.
