Seventy-nine individual plants of Commelina benghalesis collected from nine different localities (populations) in Kochi Prefecture had commonly the somatic chromosome number of 2n=22, the chromosomes at the resting stage of the complex chromocenter type, and the chromosomes at mitotic prometaphase of the interstitial type. Numbers of sat-chromosomes and sizes of satellites showed interpopulational variation and thus, performed four types of karyotypes in Kochi Prefecture, Japan; Type 1 : the karyotype including two sat-chromosomes with two large satellites (0.5-0.7μm), Type 2 : the karyotype including four sat-chromosomes with two large and two small satellites (0.1-0.2μm), Type 3 : the karyotype including four sat-chromosomes with a small satellite respectively, and Type 4 : the karyotype including two sat-chromosomes with a small satellite. The population of Type 1 was found in a little shady wet soil under trees in the mountains, and the population of Type 2 was found in footpathes between sunny fields with suitable wet soil in the mountains. The populations of Types 3 and 4 were found in sandy soil near the coast or the river bank in Kochi Prefecture, Japan.
