The presenter will demonstrate some effective teaching techniques and classroom activities that he has employed to teach sophomore English majors in the Media English course at a university in the eastern Tokyo area. This course, with approximately 30 students in class, is composed of two terms : the first term is mainly geared to develop students' ability to read and understand English newspapers with ease and efficiency, and the second term is primarily devoted to enhancing their ability to listen to and understand TV news programs. However, from a broader perspective, in both terms, the teaching materials are also utilized as a springboard to subsequent activities involving speaking, writing, listening and reading skills. More precisely, this course is comprehensive and students are given ample opportunity to research information relevant to issues depicted in news stories, to discuss, and to give presentations on these topics. Thus, this course aims to improve the students' overall language skills and expand their vocabulary and knowledge about journalistic English and current issues. In this session, first the presenter will focus on how the four skills can be effectively integrated in teaching Media English. Subsequently, the presenter will discuss a group presentation, one of the main activities that students are involved in and explain how he leads them to be good presenters throughout the course, such as by observing and analyzing a model presentation, by employing some effective techniques to attract the audience, and by reflecting on their own videotaped performances. This section will include an explanation of several motivating factors relevant to the use of these teaching approaches and authentic materials as partly conveyed by students' feedback. If time permits, a videotaped class will be shown to explicate one of the tasks to the audience. In addition, the presenter will discuss teaching techniques and tasks to accommodate students' diversity of proficiencies and interests.
