It has been long pointed out that practical knowledge and school knowledge have been mutually exclusive : learners see little connection between what they learn in the classroom with real life. Criticisms have been leveled at the failure of "school English" as inadequate for communication. Experiences tell that students who score well on standardized tests such as STEP, TOEFL or TOEIC are not always able to successfully communicate in real-life situations. Students should be able to apply what they learn in classrooms to the various and unpredictable communication situations that they might encounter over the course of their life. However, they lack opportunities and environments in which they can apply their knowledge and communication skills to real-life situations in their daily life where no English-speaking people are readily available. What can be a solution to the problem? Technology comes to the rescue. It can turn a classroom into a networked hub with students communicating online. The underlying assumption is that communication is prompted in an appropriate environment which is authentic and meaningful to the learners. Computer- mediated-communication (CMC) used for the purpose provides such an environment in a classroom. It is also useful for enhancing interaction and collaboration among the learners. In order to activate students to communicate online in English, instruction was designed for the classes in a CALL-based classroom as follows.
